The New START Treaty is nearing its expiration and the Nuclear Non-Proliferation Treaty is experiencing serious shocks, Russian Ambassador to the United States Anatoly Antonov said in an article published on the website of the US’ National Interest magazine on Wednesday.

Russian Security Council Deputy Chairman Dmitry Medvedev on Tuesday said he doesn’t believe the US and NATO would intervene if Russia launched a nuclear strike in Ukraine over fears of a "nuclear apocalypse" despite recent comments from US officials.

Medvedev, a former Russian president, also reiterated that Moscow believes it has the right to use nuclear weapons if Russia’s existence is threatened.

Soon after Russian President Vladimir Putin's speech announcing partial mobilization of national forces for the operation in Ukraine, which included a hint of willingness to resort to nuclear defense of Russia's territorial integrity, Navy Admiral Charles A. Richard - who currently serves as the US Strategic Command chief - confirmed that the Pentagon is taking the Russian nuclear threat seriously.
