The United States general in command of the Middle East headed to Israel on Thursday to coordinate with Israeli defense officials after Iran threatened retaliation against the country for an attack in Syria.

General Michael 'Erik' Kurilla's expected meeting with Israeli Defense Minister Yoav Gallant and other senior Israel Defense Forces officials was first reported by Axios. Kurilla is commander of U.S. Central Command.

Iran's foreign minister has accused the United States of approving a deadly strike blamed on Israel that destroyed Tehran's Damascus consulate last week after he inaugurated a new consulate in the Syrian capital.

Tehran, a key Damascus ally, has vowed to avenge last Monday's air strike on the Iranian embassy's consular section that killed seven Iran's Revolutionary Guard members, including two generals.

"America is responsible for this incident and must be held accountable," Iranian Foreign Minister Hossein Amir-Abdollahian told reporters in Damascus on Monday.

During a speech in Beirut on Friday, Hezbollah leader Hassan Nasrallah said that Iran will surely retaliate for last week’s attack, presumably by Israel, on its consulate in Damascus that led to the death of seven members of the Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps, including senior Al-Quds commander Mohammad Reza Zahedi.

The Syrian Arab Army (SAA) launched a series of strikes against militants’ positions, vehicles and heavy weapons in the countryside of Idlib and Aleppo in cooperation with Russian forces in the country, the Syrian Ministry of Defense announced on April 6.

The day and night strikes were carried out in response to recent attacks by terrorist groups that targeted several towns and villages as well as military positions, the ministry said in a statement, adding that “dozens” of military personnel were wounded or killed in the retaliatory strikes.

The US has picked up intelligence on what an Iranian retaliatory strike for the alleged Israeli strike on the Iranian consulate in Damascus in which a senior member of the Iranian Revolutionary Guards was eliminated, will look like, CBS News reported on Friday.

ISIS cells in central Syria launched late on April 7 a large attack against the Syrian Arab Army (SAA) and the National Defense Forces (NDF) in the northwestern countryside of Deir Ezzor.

The attack reportedly targeted several military positions between the towns of Madan and al-Tabni, along a key highway that links Deir Ezzor with the neighboring governorate of Raqqa. Government troops launched flares and clashes with ISIS cells well into the morning of April 6.

The Islamic Resistance in Iraq (IRI), an umbrella group of Iranian-backed armed factions, announced that it had carried out three more attacks against Israel in response to the war on the Gaza Strip.

In three separate statements, the group said that it had struck two Israeli targets, including a military site in the occupied Syrian Golan Heights, on April 4 as well as oil refineries in the northern city of Haifa on April 6. The last attack was carried out using a drone that is thought to be made in Iran and is commonly known as Shahed-101.

Russia's Defense Ministry announced on Wednesday it had deployed additional forces in the Syrian-controlled areas of the Golan Heights, where Israel had allegedly struck at an increasing rate over the last few months.

The forces, from Russia's military police, were tasked with de-escalating tensions in the Syrian provinces of Quneitra and Daraa, as well as monitoring the longstanding ceasefire issued as part of the Syrian Civil War.

Iran warned United Nations Security Council envoys to expect retaliation against Israel’s apparent bombardment of a diplomatic facility in Syria that killed several Iranian military commanders.
